Antigua & Barbuda Cuisine

There are many tourists in Antigua & Barbuda, so there are numerous dishes from both the local and international cuisine that are especially prepared for their delight. In the capital of St John’s, there can be found various restaurants that serve international cuisines but still, the traditional food is the most frequently consumed one. Some of the most famous dishes in the capital are the local and traditional desserts, which include a variety of tropical ice-creams and mousses or fruit tarts. Among these, there is the key lime mousse or the creole coconut tart and the chocolate torte, with an intense flavour of the local cocoa. In cities like St Mary and St Phillip, the local dishes include a wide range of fish meals, especially prepared as grilled fillets and cold meals like the cold cut plate (with roast beef, ham, turkey, cheese with greens and baked bread), which are a speciality of the local cooks and chefs.

The national dish of Antigua and Barbuda is fungie (pronounced "foon-jee") and pepper pot. Fungie is a dish very similar to the Italian polenta, and is almost completely made from cornmeal. Other local dishes include ducana, season rice, saltfish and lobster (from Barbuda). There are also local confectioneries which include: sugarcake, fudge, raspberry and tamarind stew and peanut brittle.

Although these foods are indigenous to Antigua & Barbuda and to some other Caribbean countries, the local diet has diversified and now include the local dishes of Jamaica (e.g. jerk pork), Guyana (e.g. roti) and other Caribbean countries.

Antiguans and Barbudans celebrate with family dinners their national day or the Day of Independence (on the 1st of November). On Christmas, the city is full of tourists who are delighted by the exotic dishes, like the big banana jumbo dog, brushetta, fillets or fresh local fish, roast beef and grilled chickens, served with the local coconut, banana, various pastas, tossed greens and vegetables with local herbs and spices or local breads and dips.

Local drinks are mauby, seamoss, tamarind juice, raspberry juice, mango juice, lemonade, coconut milk, hibiscus juice, ginger beer, passion fruit juice, guava juice soursop juice ginger beer etc. Adults favour beers, malts and rums, many of which are made locally, including Wadadli beer (named after the original name of the island) and the award winning English Harbour Rum.
